Public lighting: renovations to lighting in all Dorsale tunnels

Energy efficiency is a key priority in the Prince’s Government’s efforts for the energy transition in the Principality.

The Department of Urban Amenities (DAU), under the supervision of the Department of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, has launched work to replace public lighting systems. In 2021, fluorescent or sodium lamps in the Principality’s tunnels were replaced with LED lighting, which is much less energy-intensive and lasts much longer.

They last between 80,000 to 100,000 hours longer than the obsolete equipment, considerably reducing the number of days the roadways are closed in the long term, and produce less waste, since they only need to be replaced every ten years.

With the work in the Sainte-Dévote–Débarcadère and Digue tunnels completed, the DAU is now continuing its campaign to modernise public lighting in all Dorsale tunnels, which will be closed successively from 9.30 pm to 6 am according to the following schedule:

  • Phase 1 from 06/01/25 to 05/02/25: closure of the Rocher Nice tunnel under the Rocher, Rocher tunnel and the Canton tunnel.
  • Phase 2 from 10/02/25 to 28/02/25: closure of the Colle tunnel, Dorsale, Hélios, lower Fontvieille and Rocher Nice tunnel under the Rocher.
  • Phase 3 from 16/06/25 to 04/08/25: closure of the Dorsale and Canton (T2ter) tunnels and Larvotto tunnel.
