IPCC to officially launch Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate on 25 September in Monaco

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will hold its 51st session in the Principality of Monaco from 20 to 23 September 2019, during which the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (#SROCC), assessing the physical processes and impacts of climate change on ocean, coastal, polar and mountain ecosystems, will be considered. The report also evaluates the impacts on human communities and the options which will help populations to adapt to climate change for a more sustainable future.

At the behest of the Sovereign Prince, the Monegasque Government and the Prince Albert II Foundation began working actively to secure publication of this special report in 2016, due to the potentially grave consequences of climate change and increased greenhouse gas emissions for the oceans.

As part of its sixth assessment cycle, the IPCC published a special report in October 2018 on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C and another on climate change and land, focusing on climate change, land degradation and food security, in August 2019. The SROCC will be the third special report to be published this cycle.
