European Week for Waste Reduction: the Department of the Environment organises a drive to collect eyeglasses and sunglasses
As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), held from 21 to 26 November 2023 in the Principality, the Department of the Environment has launched a drive to collect eyeglasses and sunglasses.
The theme of this year’s edition —Packaging— is intended to raise awareness about the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Packaging was chosen as the focus following a recently published proposal from the European Commission to regulate its use and scale up the reduction and re-use of materials.
The objective of the 2023 EWWR campaign, which is open to all motivated and committed stakeholders wishing to lead awareness-raising initiatives about waste reduction, is to inform the general public about the use of packaging and encourage the reuse of materials.
As part of these efforts to reuse and recycle, the Department of the Environment will set up four boxes at the entrance of the Fontvieille shopping centre from 13 to 26 November to collect eyewear that is no longer used. The glasses will be donated to Semeurs d’Espoir, a non-profit in Monaco, and passed along to people who need them.
