Monaco signs up to the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO)
On Thursday 20 March 2025, the Prince's Government became a signatory member of the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO) initiative. Monaco's ambassador to France, H.E. Ms Valérie Bruel-Melchior, officially signed the Charter during the SCO's third congress at the Centre de Conférences Ministériel in Paris, in the presence of officials from Monaco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Office for Outer Space Affairs.
The SCO is an international initiative that aims to facilitate the use of space technologies to monitor, mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. Bringing together more than 50 public and private organisations with expertise in space-related matters, it relies on the use of satellite data combined with in situ observations and digital models to provide decision makers with tools and information. The SCO encourages collaboration between space agencies, research institutions and public and private stakeholders to disseminate knowledge and advocate for open science. Its main objective is to improve knowledge of the climate and to support actions that boost resilience to climate change.
Monaco's membership to the SCO marks a significant step in its commitment to climate action. By supporting this initiative, the Principality will be able to call upon an international network of partners and the expertise of space technologies in order to gain a better understanding and ability to predict climate change. This collaboration will be invaluable, particularly concerning Monaco's efforts to support developing countries in their fight against climate change in accordance with its international commitments. The SCO also serves as a platform for connecting providers of spatial solutions for climate action with potential funders.
By becoming a signatory, the Prince's Government is also affirming its close ties with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), the founder of the SCO, thus strengthening the scientific and institutional cooperation that is vital for tackling the climate crisis.
