Adoption of the General Assembly resolution on sport and the Olympic ideal
On 21 November 2023, following a meeting of the Friends of Sport group, the General Assembly adopted the resolution entitled ‘Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal’. The meeting was held under the joint presidency of Monaco and Qatar, in the presence of the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the French Ambassador for Sport and the International Relations Director for Paris 2024.
The IOC President, Dr Thomas Bach, thanked Monaco and Qatar for their efforts and expressed how pleased he was with the preparations for the Paris Games and with their high ambitions. He observed that in a world more polarised by conflict than ever, the values of peace and solidarity held up by sport are even more important.
In her speech to the General Assembly, Mrs Daphné le Son, Deputy Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations, reminded the audience that sport is a symbol of global unity and congratulated the IOC for its efforts in matters of gender equality and the host nation for its commitment to the climate.
