Novel coronavirus in China: preventive measures

Cases of pulmonary infection caused by a novel coronavirus named “2019-nCoV” have emerged in China.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses known to cause illnesses from the common cold to more serious diseases. A novel coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus which has not previously been identified in humans.

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is staying abreast of the situation: as a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Monaco receives information in real time, under the International Health Regulations, about measures that should be taken as the situation changes. The Department of Health Affairs is also monitoring the information provided by the French and Italian health ministries.

At this stage, the WHO Emergency Committee has assessed that the situation does not constitute a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

Only those who have been exposed within the last 14 days, having visited China or been in close contact with a person infected with the virus and showing symptoms of a lower respiratory tract infection (cough and fever) are considered to be potentially infected and should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

The Department of Health Affairs has issued information on measures to take in the event of a suspected case of the disease to the relevant teams and healthcare professionals.

The public are advised to avoid visiting affected areas unless such travel is essential.

The Monegasque authorities are continuing to monitor the situation carefully.
