This Thursday, 10 August 2017, the Republic of Cabo Verde became the 135th State to establish diplomatic relations with the Principality of Monaco.

H.E. Mr. Jose Luis Fiahlo Rocha and H.E. Ms. Isabelle Picco, Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, signed the joint communiqué in which our States, one of which is a member of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries and the other of the International Organization of la Francophonie, undertake to further develop their links of friendship and cooperation.

The Republic of Cabo Verde is an archipelagic African tropical State.  It has an exclusive economic zone of 309,098 square miles for a territory of 1,572 square miles and a continental shelf of more than 1,930 square miles.

By establishing these diplomatic relations, Monaco is strengthening its collaboration with an island State whose economy, which is mainly based on tourism, is particularly impacted by climate change.

Cabo Verde is an example of democracy, success and stability in West Africa.  At a very early stage, it was committed to combating illegal drugs and strengthening its capacity to respond to security issues, while at the same time developing its infrastructure and agriculture and ensuring access to water and sanitation, employment and social services.

This Macaronesian State will be the 2nd port of call for Monaco Explorations;  the ship "Yersin" is due to undertake scientific research there in September.
