CORONAVIRUS: the Lockdown is Extended until 15 April in the Principality of Monaco

On the instructions of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and following the example of the measures taken by the French Republic, the Prince's Government is extending the decision of 17 March concerning temporary restrictions on travel until 15 April 2020 inclusive.

To continue the efforts made over the past ten days to try to contain the spread of the virus, the travel restriction measures are being extended for a renewable period of two weeks as from next Tuesday.

It is essential to remember that the virus does not circulate by itself;  it is the movement of people that helps to spread the pandemic.  That is why the Prince's Government, at the request of His Serene Highness the Sovereign Prince, has taken a set of measures to protect the national community.

Only limited travel to buy food supplies, for medical treatment or assistance to a family member is authorised.  A short outing to walk pets or for individual sports practice is also permitted.

Places that are open to the public that are not essential to the life of the country remain closed (including restaurants, cafés, theatres, cinemas, casinos and discotheques).  Only the following remain open:

•             Food shops and food markets,

•             Chemists,

•             Tobacconists and newsagents,

•             Petrol stations and banks.

The restrictions on travel between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. also remain in place.  As a reminder, the following personal movements are prohibited between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.:

•             Travel to purchase supplies necessary for professional activity and purchases of basic necessities in local establishments and local shops that are authorised to receive the public;

•             Short trips, close to home, related to the individual physical activity of persons and the needs of pets.

Shops must now close to the public from 9.30 p.m., to enable their customers to respect these measures.

These restrictions on night-time travel do not apply to persons who are duly authorised to travel because of the essential nature of their role, such as healthcare and care workers, forces of public order, public health and safety workers and any other persons who can justify an essential need, such as assistance to a vulnerable person.

The Police Department will ensure that the measures adopted are strictly applied and will be empowered to issue a fine of up to 200 euros to anyone contravening these measures.
