Ban on single-use plastic bags
Since mid-2016, single-use plastic checkout bags have been banned in the Principality. On 1 January 2017, this ban was extended to all plastic bags used for packing goods in stores (supermarkets, butcher’s shops, markets, chemists, etc.).
Only compostable bags made of at least 30% bio-based materials are now allowed. This proportion will be gradually increased to a minimum of 40% by 1 January 2018, 50% by 1 January 2020 and 60% by 1 January 2025.
Compostable bags display the standard NF T51-800 or the label “OK compost Home”.
In practice, this ban covers the bags used to pack loose produce in food shops or on market stalls (weighed fruit and vegetables, wrapped fish, dried fruits, etc.).
It is a strong commitment that represents a new step towards a more environmentally-aware approach to business, the implementation of which relies on the involvement of the Principality’s retailers and consumers.
The Prince’s Government recently supplied all residents with an organic cotton “bag for life” and a leaflet to promote the use of reusable bags.
