Monaco Takes Part in the "Water and Climate" Summit
H.E. Mr Robert Fillon, Ambassador of Monaco to Italy, represented the Prince's Government at the Summit of States concerned by the water problem in the face of climate change. This summit, which was initiated by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, took place from 23 to 25 October in Rome.
The Summit was opened by the Italian Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, and Minister of the Environment, Gian Luca Galletti. It was an opportunity for political decision-makers and experts to discuss the many aspects of this issue in depth. The discussions led, in particular, to emphasising the importance of river basins and trans-boundary cooperation for water management, based on the principles of equity and sustainability, and appropriate decision-making and financing mechanisms.
At the end of the work, a declaration was adopted by the participants. It was supported by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who wished to attend in person to speak at the closing of the Summit. The text adopted is to be forwarded to the COP 23, to be held in Bonn, Germany from 7 to 16 November, in order to further integrate water-related issues in these negotiations.
