COP25 - Monaco Takes Part in the High-Level Segment of the 25th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
On 11 December, as part of the high-level segment of COP25, which is currently taking place in Madrid, H.E. Mr. Jean-Luc Van Klaveren, Ambassador of Monaco to Spain, delivered the Principality's national speech. In particular, the Ambassador gave details of the Prince's Government's action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while recalling the Principality's solidarity with developing countries.
Discussions are ongoing to finalise the rulebook for the implementation of the Paris Agreement before the crucial deadline of 2020, when it must take effect.
While the latest report by the United Nations Environment Programme on global climate activity shows that the current trajectory will not make it possible to limit global warming to 1.5°C, this Conference was dedicated by the Chilean Presidency to increasing collective ambition. Science, which must remain the basis for political decisions, as well as the oceans, were also central to the debates. The IPCC's Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, adopted last September in Monaco, has been the subject of much discussion.
Throughout COP25, Monaco has played an active part in the intergovernmental negotiations, both as a State Party and through the Environmental Integrity Group, a negotiating group of which the Principality is a member, alongside Switzerland, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Georgia and Liechtenstein.
