COVID-19: 22 government departments acquire clear face masks to facilitate communication with the public

 While their role in preventing COVID-19 is now evident, fabric masks can pose problems for deaf and hard-of-hearing people who rely on lip-reading.

To address this challenge, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs has ordered some “clear window” masks.

These types of masks have a clear panel in the centre, which means that the wearer’s mouth is visible and their lips can be read. They are made of a thin, light, breathable fabric. The clear panel is kept away from the mouth to improve comfort when speaking and is treated with an anti-fog coating. It allows the wearer’s facial expressions to be seen. The masks can be washed up to 20 times and are 100% made in France.

Reception staff in 22 government departments who deal with the public will be equipped with clear face masks from Monday 15 March. It’s a solution that will improve everyday quality of life for vulnerable people so that they can once again enjoy more natural interactions with public services.

The departments will also be given an awareness guide on greeting deaf and hard-of-hearing people, including advice on the correct use of these inclusive masks and a notice that can be displayed on their reception desks to inform deaf and hard-of-hearing people that this service can be made available on request.

The Association Monégasque pour les Personnes Sourdes (AMPS, Monegasque Association for the Deaf) has also received a free supply of inclusive masks.
