UN - International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
On 3 April 2019, at the UN, more than 500 people took part in the 6th International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (celebrated on 6 April). This event, organised by the Permanent Missions of the Principality of Monaco and Qatar, co-chairs of the Group of Friends of Sport, in association with the UN Department of Global Communications and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, was an opportunity to promote the Sustainable Development Goals through sport.
The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, made some introductory remarks. Then, Laurent Dupont, Director of the Peace & Sport Association, invited participants to wave the #WhiteCard.
The President of the Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri, Laura Gentile, Vice-President of Marketing and founder of ESPN Women, Ann Rosenberg, Vice-President of SAP Next-Gen, Agnès Marcaillou, the Director of UNMAS, and Juan Pablo Salazar, a member of the International Paralympic Committee, supported by moderator Tabitha Lipkin, a sports journalist at Fox 5 San Diego, outlined the role of sport as a cross-cutting facilitator for implementing the 2030 development agenda.
