H.E. Ms Anne-Marie Boisbouvier, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to UNESCO, took part in celebrations organised to mark the creation, 100 years ago, of the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (IIIC), the precursor of UNESCO.

The event took place on 13 September 2024 at the organisation’s headquarters in Paris under the banner: “Celebrating a Century of International Intellectual Cooperation: from Legacy to Future Action”.

Organised at the initiative of H.E. Ms. Simona-Mirela Miculescu, President of the 42nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO, the meeting was an opportunity to review the achievements and challenges faced by IIIC, while exploring new perspectives to strengthen intellectual cooperation at UNESCO.

The commemorative event provided a chance to:

-        Promote the exceptional collections of photographs and videos conserved at UNESCO;

-        Encourage discussion on intellectual cooperation and the work of UNESCO at round table talks with scientists and historians.

Discussions addressed issues such as building peace and mutual understanding, the promotion of gender equality, the development of technology for the common good and closing the digital divide.

The event was also an opportunity to raise awareness among Member States and the general public about the document and audiovisual archives of UNESCO and of the IIIC in particular, along with the importance of preserving them.

 In a speech delivered at the closing cocktail reception, H.E. Ms Anne-Marie Boisbouvier expressed how proud the Principality was to take part in the event. She explained how the partnership arose from research conducted at the UNESCO archives to prepare celebrations this year for the 75th anniversary of Monaco’s accession to UNESCO, for which the preparation of a publication is underway. The Ambassador concluded by recalling Monaco’s financial contribution to the safeguarding of UNESCO archival films and has invited other countries to take part in preserving this shared heritage.
