Principality to take part in Philadelphia Flower Show
On Thursday 16 January, Monaco’s Embassy in the United States, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development and the Prince Albert II Foundation, announced during a press conference in Philadelphia that it would be taking part in the Philadelphia Flower Show 2020 from 29 February to 8 March. The theme for this year’s Show is the French Riviera (“Riviera Holiday”). The Philadelphia Flower Show was started in 1829 by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. It covers an area of four hectares and is to this day the United States’ biggest annual show, attracting more than 250,000 visitors.
Through its special links to Philadelphia, the native city of Princess Grace, the Principality has participated in the Show before: in 1990 when the theme was “Gardens for the Senses”, a topic close to the Princess’s heart. Created by American designer Renée Tucci, the Principality’s garden will feature several varieties of rose, including the Princess Charlene of Monaco rose, commemorating the bonds that have linked the Principality of Monaco to the city of Philadelphia since 18 April 1956.
In parallel, the American branch of the Prince Albert II Foundation is organising a symposium on gardens and biodiversity to be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on 4 March. Experts including the world renowned botanist Dr Peter Raven and Dr Dennis Whigham, an expert on plants and ecology, will discuss the issue of eco-friendly gardening which protects the environment and biodiversity.
These events will give the general public an opportunity to learn more about the Principality of Monaco’s commitment to sustainable development and saving the planet.
