United Nations: Monaco includes sport in resolution on Commission for Social Development’s priority theme

The Principality of Monaco’s Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York took part in the 59th session of the Commission for Social Development, held from 8 to 17 February 2021. The subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council chose the following as its priority theme for this year’s session: “Socially just transition towards sustainable development: the role of digital technologies on social development and wellbeing of all”, a perfect theme for the current context.

Alyson Calem-Sangiorgio, Third Secretary at the Principality of Monaco’s Permanent Representation to the United Nations, spoke during the general debate to highlight the essential role that digital technology plays in the Principality of Monaco, particularly as part of the Extended Monaco and Monaco Santé programmes, as well as the importance of a secure digital sector, which is ensured in the Principality through the use of blockchain technology and the work of the Data Protection Authority of Monaco (CCIN).

The session also resulted in the adoption of a resolution on digital technology at the service of social development. Conscious of the importance of engaging in sport at home, particularly in the context of a pandemic, the Monegasque delegation succeeded in having this issue included as part of the resolution on the priority theme. The Commission thus recognises the potential of digital technology for sport and physical activity.
