Monaco Takes Part in the Venice Commission
A Monegasque delegation travelled to Venice to take part in the 108th plenary session of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (usually referred to as the Venice Commission), held on 14 and 15 October 2016.
Professor Didier Linotte, President of Monaco's highest constitutional and administrative jurisdiction, was invited to inform the Commission of recent changes relating to the organisation and functioning of the Principality's Supreme Court, and gave a speech on this subject at the plenary session on 15 October. In particular, he described the nature of these changes and their advantages for persons under this jurisdiction and for the rule of law.
At this meeting, the Professor recalled Monaco's long-standing control of constitutionality, which dates back to the constitution of 1911, and the Monegasque State's resulting concern for fundamental rights.
The Commission is a consultative body that specialises in constitutional law. It was created within the framework of the Council of Europe and has its headquarters in Venice. It is comprised of independent experts from all of its member States, as well as observer States from every continent.
