“Young Philosophers” series - Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 May 2019

The Philosophical Encounters of Monaco are presenting a new event in the Principality, a series of days entitled “Young Philosophers”. The event will take place from 8 to 11 May 2019, and is being organised by Joseph Cohen, Robert Maggiori and Raphael Zagury-Orly, under the chairmanship of Charlotte Casiraghi. These days are open to everyone, and the goal is to raise young people’s awareness of philosophy and make it accessible to them.

Some of the highlights on the programme include:

-          A presentation of works created by children during the philosophical workshops on the theme of “The Human Being”, led by nursery teachers (Grande Section) from Monaco’s schools, in coordination with the Department for Education, Youth and Sport.

Nouveau Musée National de Monaco – Villa Sauber, 8 to 11 May, from 10 am to 6 pm.

-          A piece of theatre, Le Poète et le philosophe (The Poet and the Philosopher), inspired by Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus and Plato’s Apology of Socrates, which has been made possible thanks to support from the Department of Education, Youth and Sport in association with Les Rencontres théâtrales Jean Cocteau. The performance will be followed by a discussion with Robert Maggiori, a philosopher and founder member of Philosophical Encounters of Monaco.

Théâtre Princesse Grace, Thursday 9 May, 7 pm/9 pm.

-          A debate on “Adolescences”, presented by Claire Chazal, journalist and author, with Hakima Aït el Cadi, sociologist, Manuella de Luca, psychiatrist and director of the journal Adolescence, and Claire Marin, philosopher, teacher and director of Gallimard’s Philophile collection.

Théâtre Princesse Grace, Friday 10 May, 7 pm/9 pm.

Tickets start at €15 (free for students and under 25s on presentation of ID). Proceeds will be donated in full to the charity Jeune j’écoute (www.jeunejecoute.mc ). 

-          A round table on “How philosophy considers childhood”, presented by Raphael Zagury-Orly, philosopher and founding member of Philosophical Encounters of Monaco, with philosophers Paul Audi, André Charrak and Pierre Guenancia.

Monaco’s Vocational and Catering School, Saturday 11 May, 10 am/12 pm. 

-          A round table on “Reading, growing, thinking”, presented by Edwige Chirouter, holder of the UNESCO Chair on the Practice of Philosophy with Children, with Nicole Lambert, comic author and creator, and Claire Marin, philosopher, teacher and director of Gallimard’s Philophile collection.

Monaco’s Vocational and Catering School, Saturday 11 May, 2 pm/4 pm.

In partnership with the Department of Education, Youth and Sport, and teachers working in Monaco’s schools, guest philosophers will be in residence in secondary schools on Thursday 9 May (collèges) and Friday 10 May (lycées), as well as at Monaco’s Vocational and Catering School.  

A philosophical magazine produced with children and teachers from seven primary classes will be published during the “Young Philosophers” event.

Enfance et Violence (Childhood and Violence), a book by Charlotte Casiraghi and Boris Cyrulnik, published by Philosophical Encounters of Monaco following the lecture given at the Théâtre Princesse Grace in Monaco in February 2018, will also be released.

The UNESCO Chair on the Practice of Philosophy with Children certification was awarded to Philosophical Encounters of Monaco in 2019.
