The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM), in partnership with Morad Montazami and Madeleine de Colnet for Zamân Books & Curating, is presenting an exhibition titled “Monaco–Alexandria: The Great Detour. World Cities and Cosmopolitan Surrealism” at Villa Sauber. The exhibition offers a perspective on the little-known links between two world cities of the twentieth century, Monaco and Alexandria. In both, tourist mythologies and dreams have left as much of a mark as have the avant-gardes in exile.

The exhibition seeks to write a new chapter in the history of surrealism through Mediterranean cosmopolitanism, thanks to the writers, poets, artists, set designers and philosophers who all embody a desire to find fulfilment between fluid, cross-border worlds, moving beyond the rise in nationalism and fascism.

Nearly 300 works, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, objects, texts and videos, are displayed as part of the exhibition. Around 50 of them are drawn from the NMNM’s collections, with the rest coming from other Monegasque collections (Prince’s Palace, Monaco Audiovisual Institute, Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, Monaco Oceanographic Museum, etc.) and special loans from public and private Egyptian collections.
