With 48 hours to go before the opening of the 36th Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie on 30 and 31 October, Ms Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF), has responded to her first media requests, speaking to Monaco Info soon after her arrival in the Principality. The interview with Ms Mushikiwabo will be broadcast during the evening news bulletin on Wednesday.

Ms Mushikiwabo is banking on this event to “strengthen ties within the Francophone family and work towards ever greater unity.” She considers this to be “a very important event.” “First of all for me, because this is my first meeting with the ministers from the various states. Secondly because we are approaching our fiftieth anniversary, which we will celebrate at the summit in Tunisia in 2020,” she explained.

The Secretary-General took advantage of the opportunity to pay tribute to the light shone by the Principality: “What are we, as human beings, as inhabitants of the planet, doing to make it better? To improve the climate? These are questions that must be asked, and that’s why I’m very grateful to the Principality for its determination to focus on this topic.”

The conference, to be held under the theme “Reconciling Humanity and the Planet: Prospects within the French-Speaking World as the IOF Turns 50” will bring together the 88 member states and governments of the IOF, with 450 people from five continents expected to attend.

Monaco has been a member of the IOF since 1970, when the organisation was founded.
