Charles I: Formation of the land
1331: Recovery of the Rocher
The conflict with Genoa persisted for around thirty years, but a temporary reconciliation allowed the Grimaldi to recover the Rocher in 1331. The new Lord of Monaco was Charles I, whose powerful fleet was frequently used by the king of France, especially during the Hundred Years’ War.
1346 – 1355: Purchase of Menton and Roquebrune
The money accumulated by Charles Grimaldi in exchange for his military services allowed him to enlarge his realm. As a result, he acquired the lordship of Menton in 1346 then the lordship of Roquebrune in 1355.
