Romanisation

In 7 BC, the Trophy of the Alps, which is visible from the port of Monaco, was erected in the area that would later be known as La Turbie. The monument was built in commemoration of the victory of the Emperor Augustus over the Celto-Ligurian tribes who had become subjects of Rome in 14 BC. With his conquest complete, the emperor had the coastal road built that linked the Rhône with Placentia in Italy. Also known as Via Julia Augusta, the road passed to the north of Monaco.
