On 11 February, H.E. Ambassador Anne-Marie Boisbouvier, Monaco’s Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), launched festivities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Principality’s accession to the Organization by inviting UNESCO ambassadors to a performance by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra at La Seine Musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris.

The concert was conducted by the internationally renowned Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra. An enthralled audience enjoyed Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story and Georges Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess, along with the work of Astor Piazzolla and arrangements of “Black Orpheus”. Guitar soloist Yamandu Costa and Marin Sued on the bandoneon brought a theatrical touch to the performance.

Chaired by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover and under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and the Prince’s Government, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra is a window on Monegasque cultural talent around the world.

Ambassadors from the United States, Ireland, Brazil, Italy, Czech Republic, San Marino, Mexico and Slovenia were among those who attended the musical evening to mark the 75th anniversary celebration. Gabriella Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO, also attended on behalf of the Organization.

On 6 July 1945, Monaco signed an accession agreement to join UNESCO, the specialised agency of the United Nations for culture, education and science. To celebrate 75 years of membership, Monaco’s Permanent Representation to UNESCO will host several events to highlight the international reach of the Principality and showcase the work of various Monegasque entities in these fields.
