RAMOGE AGREEMENT - Public survey on Ostreopsis ovata microalgae

As part of its efforts to monitor Ostreopsis ovata microalgae, the RAMOGE Agreement is participating in the European research project CoCliME. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of an increase in toxic algae on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts as the climate changes. This will help public authorities and private stakeholders to better anticipate the effects.

To complete the study, a PhD student and a Master’s student from the University of Nantes, the scientific partner for the project, will be carrying out a field survey of residents of the Principality of Monaco from 16 June to 15 September.

A 30-minute questionnaire will ask volunteers how often they visit the beaches and inlets in Monaco and the surrounding region, and about their possible reactions given a range of different climate change scenarios. The survey will be conducted in the Principality’s main public locations, including Larvotto Beach, Plage des Pêcheurs, the public gardens and Quai Albert I. The two students conducting the survey will be recognisable by their University of Nantes T-shirts. They will also be wearing badges indicating that they are part of the survey.

The University of Nantes is studying the possible effects of toxic algae on the behaviours and habits of residents and tourists in Monaco, Nice and Marseille with regard to leisure activities and their visits to the Mediterranean coast. The scientific supervisor for the research is Muriel Travers, Professor of Economics at the University of Nantes.

The data gathered will be entirely anonymous and processed solely by the university research team led by Professor Travers. No commercial use will be made of the survey results.

The results will help to build up the database required for research into this new climate change-related challenge.
