Today, Cyril Gomez, Director General of the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, opened the 68th meeting of the Permanent Committee of the Alpine Convention.  In his speech, he emphasised that, "For 20 years, Monaco has been participating alongside the Member Parties of the Alpine Convention in efforts to reconcile, in a sustainable manner, economic development and the preservation of the natural assets of this vast and sensitive area, the Alps," adding, "As we know, the fragility of the Alpine areas is an additional factor in the risk of natural disasters, which have a direct impact on local populations and economies."

Until tomorrow, the Secretary General, Alenka Smerkolj, and delegates from the eight member countries of the Convention and the European Union will assess the work carried out by the various working groups on the major themes of transport, natural risks, the alpine climate, soil protection, biodiversity, agriculture and forestry.  Under the aegis of the French Presidency of the Alpine Conference, particular attention is being paid to the issue of air quality.

This meeting, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, is an eco-responsible institutional event.  The 68th Permanent Committee of the Alpine Convention is committed to an approach that is aimed at minimising the environmental impact of this meeting by adhering to the Monaco Charter of Eco-Responsible Events.  In this spirit, it will offset the carbon footprint of its travel.
