Monaco elected to UN Women Executive Board

Monaco was elected to the UN Women Executive Board by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on 20 April.

The UN Women Executive Board has 41 members. It governs the organisation’s operational activities and ensures that they comply with the principles and values of the United Nations. Members meet throughout the year to review the organisation’s work and strategic plan, discuss its programmes and activities, and oversee financial plans and budgets.

Monaco, which makes an annual voluntary contribution of €20,000 to UN Women, regularly speaks on the issue of protecting women’s rights, whether as part of the work of the Third Committee (social, humanitarian and cultural issues) or at the annual Commission on the Status of Women.

In 2015, Monaco became a founding member of the Group of Friends on Gender Parity, whose goal is to advance women’s leadership, advocate for parity and maintain a gender balance at the United Nations. In 2020, the Principality joined the Group of Friends for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

To coincide with the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, female ambassadors and permanent representatives to the United Nations published an article entitled ‘Generation Equality: Women’s Leadership as a Catalyst for Change’.1

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Monaco has supported joint declarations on violence against women and on the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action.

The Principality of Monaco’s Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York regularly organises and takes part in events that aim to raise awareness of the role of women and women’s rights.

The theme of empowering women and girls through sport is another key focus, as illustrated by the participation of H.E. Ms Isabelle Picco in a UN Women parallel event held as part of the Sport for Generation Equality initiative in October 2020, and the introduction of paragraphs on sport in the final documents issued by the Commission on the Status of Women in 2019 and 2021.
