PRINCE PIERRE OF MONACO FOUNDATION - Meetings and Debates From 20 March to 29 May 2017 – Pavillon Bosio

 

In 2017, the Prince Pierre Foundation is offering a new way of meeting with the public. The traditional lectures are being replaced with a thematic cycle of meetings and debates, held in a convivial venue, which varies with each season.

 This year, the focus is on contemporary art, and prestigious guests will present their lectures in the Garden Room of the Pavillon Bosio.

Monday 20 March:  Philippe Rahm

"Gradation of Intensity - the art of building the backgrounds to our lives"

"The architecture of the past decades aimed to be idiosyncratic, subjective and narrative, offering buildings as figures in the foreground, which are sometimes spectacular and sculptural.  For us, architecture must above all be an objective, neutral background, a background without any particular form, set back (...).  But being in the background and being neutral does not mean giving up beauty and expressiveness ... "

Architect Philippe Rahm graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique of Lausanne in 1993.  His agency, "Philippe Rahm Architects" has been established in Paris since 2008.  He is a Visiting Professor at Harvard University, USA and a Professor at the National School of Architecture in Versailles.  His work, which extends the field of architecture to the physiological and meteorological, has acquired an international following in the context of sustainable development.

Monday 24 April:  Rudy Ricciotti

"Untitled"

A critical look at the trade of the architect, economics and the political dimension of this discipline.

Rudy Ricciotti is an architect and engineer.  He was the winner of the National Major Prize for Architecture (Grand Prix National d'Architecture) in 2006 and the Gold Medal of the Academy of Architecture and is a member of the Academy of Technologies.  He represents a generation of architects who combine the power of creativity with genuinely constructive culture.  He has used concrete to best advantage in outstanding buildings such as the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean in Marseille, the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre Museum, the Jean-Bouin Stadium in Paris, the Jean Cocteau Museum in Menton, the Republic Bridge in Montpellier, the International Centre for Art and Culture in Liege, Belgium, the Nikolaïsaal Philharmonie in Potsdam, Germany and the Peace Bridge in Seoul.

"A Century of Art in Africa - a collection in the present, a continent of the future"

"The countries of sub-Saharan Africa, which are far removed from Europe in terms of their roots, history, languages and culture, bear witness to a diversity, creativity and artistic passion that has been ignored and poorly understood for a long time.

Some extraordinary encounters between artists, art "researchers" and passionate collectors have made it possible, in less than thirty years, to bring together considerable groups of powerful works that are rich in meaning and knowledge."

André Magnin is an independent curator.  In 1986, he began his research on art in non-Western cultures for "Magicians of the World," the first global exhibition of contemporary art on this subject, which was presented in 1989 in Paris.  From 1989 to 2009, he assembled and directed the Pigozzi Collection (in Geneva), which is entirely devoted to contemporary art in sub-Saharan Africa.  In 2009, he founded MAGNIN-A, whose mission is to promote contemporary African art to the international market.

Friday 19 May: Chiara Parisi

"Not Afraid of Love"

"Not Afraid of Love" is the title of an exhibition devoted to Maurizio Cattelan, which closes the contemporary art cycle initiated five years ago to open up the Paris Mint (Monnaie de Paris) to art and the public. This was also the first exhibition by Cattelan after a five-year absence.

At this meeting, Chiara Parisi will reflect on the role of exhibition curators today and on interactions with institutions and venues dedicated to contemporary art.

Independent curator Chiara Parisi taught at La Sapienza University in Rome.  She was then in charge of developing the contemporary art hub of the Villa Medici in Rome, and in 2004 became Director of the Vassivière Art Centre.  She is a member of the FRAC Franche-Comté acquisition committee.  From 2011 to 2016, she was Director of cultural programmes at the Monnaie de Paris.

Monday 29 May:  Hans-Ulrich Obrist – BERGER & BERGER

"Museums in the 22^nd Century"

"The museum represents unstable modernity and is subject to change;  it reveals, disseminates, collects, experiments, trains, federates, reaches out, promotes ideas and creates ... Architecture, as a place of exhibition, a place of the city, a place of the public, a place of the climate, alternatively ephemeral, permanent and unseen, like a contemporary third place (...). An architecture of control as a culture of creation in an environment in crisis.  The museum as public property."

Hans Ulrich Obrist is an exhibition curator, critic and art historian.  A curator at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris until 2005, he is now Artistic Director at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

Laurent P. and Cyrille Berger

Laurent P. Berger, visual artist, and Cyrille Berger, architect, have been working together since 2006 under the name of Berger & Berger.  Together, they have taken part in numerous exhibitions and have designed public installations programmes.  Their work is represented in various public collections (such as the National Centre of Visual Arts, BnF Paris, the National Museum of Modern Art – Pompidou Centre, Mudam-Luxembourg and the NMNM in Monaco).
