Convention on Migratory Species COP 12 : ACCOBAMS contributes to work of Conference
The ACCOBAMS Permanent Secretariat is contributing to the work of the twelfth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP12).
The Secretariat presented the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative to the 500 participants attending the Conference. This is an innovative project to survey cetaceans throughout the Mediterranean Sea from aircraft or boats. The initiative will take place during summer 2018, and will involve scientists and experts from all countries bordering the Mediterranean. The Secretariat also explained the mitigation measures that have been developed by ACCOBAMS in response to the threats posed to cetaceans by underwater noise produced as a result of human activities at sea.
Finally, the Secretariat indicated that new areas in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea were currently being identified as critical habitats for cetaceans, requiring the introduction of specific protection measures, such as the creation of marine protected areas.
ACCOBAMS is one of the agreements under the aegis of the CMS. The Principality hosts, at its own expense, the organisation’s Permanent Secretariat, a fact which contributed to the country being awarded the Champion of Marine Species Conservation title.
