IAEA – Principality of Monaco attends Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications
A Monegasque delegation[i] led by Ms Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, visited Vienna from 25 to 27 November 2024 to take part in the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Programme.
The aim of this special conference was to strengthen international cooperation and explore innovations in the nuclear field, while highlighting the role of nuclear science, technology and applications in achieving the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In her speech, Isabelle Berro-Amadeï shared the importance that the Principality of Monaco attaches to the peaceful use of nuclear science, technology and applications.
The Minister also reiterated the Prince’s Government’s support for the work of the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories, which the Principality has hosted since 1961, and recalled H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince’s personal commitment to protecting the environment and combatting the impact of climate change, particularly on the oceans. She noted that a partnership had recently been agreed between the Prince Albert II Foundation and the IAEA[ii] to collaborate on areas such as ocean acidification, ocean changes and plastic pollution.
Finally, she highlighted the priority afforded by Monaco to the Agency’s work in the field of human health, reflected in practice through Monaco’s long-standing support for the Rays of Hope cancer initiative.[iii]

[iii] To mark World Cancer Day, on 4 February 2022 the IAEA launched the Rays of Hope initiative, which aims to accelerate the establishment of radiotherapy facilities in countries which do not have any, and to strengthen capacity in countries with existing infrastructure to enable them to provide satisfactory levels of cancer prevention and treatment. Following an initial pilot phase in 2022, which targeted seven countries in Africa, the Rays of Hope initiative extended its coverage across Africa, Latin America and Asia. The Principality of Monaco provided financial support for this initiative in 2022–2023, and is renewing this support for 2024–2025.
