The official presentation of the 18th International Festival of Amateur Theatre was held at the Rainier III Auditorium today. Established in 1957 and organised every four years by Studio de Monaco, this international event will bring together amateur theatre companies from all five continents from 20 to 27 August 2025.

The International Festival of Amateur Theatre, which is supported by the Prince’s Government, aims to promote intercultural dialogue through amateur theatre. It is not a competition, but rather a unique artistic event, where each company is invited to present its vision of theatre, reflecting its culture, history and sensibilities.

This year, 18 countries will take part in the event, offering the public a special opportunity to access diverse forms of theatre from all over the world. Each theatre company will perform twice on two consecutive evenings, taking to the stages at the Variety Theatre and the Théâtre Princesse Grace. Performances will begin at 6 pm each evening and will feature three different plays in sequence, with a 30-minute break between each to allow for set and prop changes. All performances are free and open to anyone to attend, though places will be limited.

Alongside the plays, workshops led by international experts will be offered to the participating companies and to the public, promoting the sharing of expertise and the development of theatrical practice. Symposia will also be held on the day after each theatrical premiere, so that actors, directors, critics and audiences can engage in a discussion of the previous day’s performances, within a structured framework that encourages reflection.

Through this event, the Principality of Monaco is confirming its commitment to culture and the international reach of amateur theatre.
