Government Archives Section

Role

The role of the Government Archives Section (SAG), which is part of the National Archives Department, is to manage the permanent archives of the executive branch, as defined by Article 44 of the Constitution.

The Section’s role is set out in Sovereign Ordinance No. 3.413 of 29 August 2011 implementing various measures concerning relations between the Government and citizens

To this effect, it oversees the selection, sorting, classification conservation and, where applicable, communication of administrative documents that are considered permanent archives, i.e. those that have to be kept indefinitely with a view to creating sources of reference for historical, statistical or scientific purposes.

In liaison with the retaining department, it selects documents with a view to, firstly, eliminating those that have no archival, historical or legal value and documenting such elimination, and secondly, transferring to the National Archives Department those documents which do hold such value. Document selection is based on the archiving standards developed by the retaining departments in conjunction with the SAG and approved by the Director of the National Archives.

It classifies and creates an inventory of the public archives that are transferred to it.

It creates research tools to facilitate access for users.

Finally, the Head of the Government Archives Section is a member of the State Archives Consultancy Committee, and provides the secretariat for the Committee.
