The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mrs Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, visited the headquarters of the United Nations Office in Geneva on 29 January 2024 to take part in the 4th cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for the Principality as part of the 45th session of the UN Human Rights Council's Working Group on the UPR.

A large delegation led by Isabelle Berro-Amadeï presented the national report on the Principality's human rights policy and answered questions from member and observer states of the UN Human Rights Council. The meeting was also attended by the State Secretary for Justice, Mrs Sylvie Petit-Leclair, Monaco's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva, H.E. Mrs Carole Lanteri, and the Chairman of the National Council's External Relations Committee, Mr Fabrice Notari. During this year's UPR, the Monegasque authorities reiterated their commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights and reported on the progress made in this area since the previous UPR, held in 2018.

This process, the preparation of which has involved numerous government departments, will culminate in the adoption of a report at the 56th session of the Human Rights Council (18 June to 12 July 2024). The report will reflect the position of the Prince’s Government on each of the proposed recommendations.

The UPR is a mechanism set up in 2006 within the framework of the UN Human Rights Council, through which member and observer states of the Council examine the human rights policies of their peers and make recommendations to strengthen them. Each UN member state is subject to this review every five years.
