An exemplary Public Health system

The field of health is a major focus of the Prince’s Government's activity, which accounts for almost 8% of the State budget to health, under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Health statistics place the Principality among the top-ranking OECD countries, but Monaco is continuing its efforts in the area of prevention, health monitoring and the quality of its healthcare system.

High-quality treatment

There are four hospitals, which are renowned for their excellent treatment throughout the local catchment area:

  • The Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) offers local care for the population in the area. The Hospital has centres of expertise (in oncology, cardiology, and geriatrics), in fields defined as priorities with regard to demography and epidemiological data (cancer and cardiovascular pathologies are the main causes of death)
  • The Monegasque Institute of Sports Medicine and Surgery
  • Monaco Cardio-Thoracic Centre
  • Monaco Private Dialysis Centre

A reconstruction project is in progress for the hospital. It aims to strengthen the complementary nature of these establishments, both within Monaco and in the adjoining areas, for example the University Hospital Centres in Nice and Marseilles.

In addition, there is wide healthcare coverage in the city, which covers all health professions.

An ongoing policy of health education, health monitoring, risk prevention and screening for major illnesses

Prevention and screening are key elements of the public health policy developed over several years by the Prince’s Government.

In this context, health education is of primordial importance, especially for young people. Its aim is to promote a high-quality environment improves lifestyles and prevent early risk behaviour (including tobacco, addictions and sexually transmitted diseases).

The various screening campaigns cover somatic pathologies (including screening for cholesterol, diabetes, breast cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, HIV, hepatitis and osteoporosis) as well as risk factors (treatment of addictions) and risk situations (people who are at risk emotionally or socially).

Monitoring is continuous.  It enables emerging diseases (such as influenza pandemics and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) to be detected, and monitoring notifiable diseases.

Ensuring that people with disabilities find their rightful place in the community

The Prince’s Government provides the means to pursue clear objectives of supporting people with disabilities and promote their autonomy and integration in daily life; to respond to the needs and care of people with severe disabilities and guarantee each person's right to dignity.

In this context, the Prince’s Government places great importance on developing the means to help people with disabilities to remain in their own home, with:

  • Specially adapted apartments to allow people to remain in their own homes
  • A quota of specially adapted apartments in each new building programme
  • A social support service aimed at assisting a person at home in the evenings and at weekends
  • Providing services: cleaning, carers
  • Quality of life for all

    • Accessibility of public buildings and other establishments with public access
    • Accessibility of the city and to transport
    • Access to culture and sport
