Ms Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, spoke at the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, in a speech broadcast on 27 February 2024.

Ms Berro-Amadeï began by reaffirming the Principality's commitment to the values and ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 75th anniversary of which was celebrated last year. The Minister then spoke of several alarming situations, including those in the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.

She also recalled the environmental and climate crisis, which poses a serious threat to the full exercise of human rights around the world. For several years, Monaco has supported the work of the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Ms Berro-Amadeï concluded by reiterating the need to promote and defend the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the unwavering commitment of Monaco to the Human Rights Council.

The Human Rights Council, a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, is the primary UN organisation with competence in the field of promoting and protecting human rights. It is headquartered in Geneva and is made up of 47 nations elected by the General Assembly for a three-year period. The 55th session is being held from 26 February to 5 April 2024.
