A Monegasque delegation led by Ms Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, took part in the work of the 64th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held in Vienna from 20 to 25 September 2020.

The aim of the conference was to set out the IAEA’s work for the coming year and to discuss and adopt resolutions on nuclear safety and security, strengthening the effectiveness of safeguards and stepping up the Agency’s science and technology activities.

In her speech during the plenary session, Ms Rosabrunetto congratulated the Agency on maintaining its operations throughout the pandemic and emphasised the need to strengthen the IAEA’s role in developing peaceful uses of nuclear energy, particularly to protect the planet or global health. She also recalled that the Principality had hosted IAEA laboratories within its borders for nearly 60 years.

In the margins of the conference, the Monegasque delegation took part in a number of parallel events, including one devoted to an IAEA initiative launched in 2019 that aims to increase access to vital care for women from low- and middle-income countries who are suffering from cancer, particularly breast or cervical cancer. The Prince’s Government is partnering this initiative through its support for the IAEA’s Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT).
