Monaco prepares for the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi
A Monegasque delegation, comprising Mrs Frédérique Vidal, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Mr Wilfrid Deri, Monaco Focal Point, took part in the 10th Annual Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives, which opens the preparatory phase leading up to the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly, to be held in Nairobi at the end of February. The theme will be 'Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution'.
Made up of delegations from around one hundred Member States, the meeting provided a detailed review of UNEP's administrative issues, strategy and programmes. Monaco particularly supports strategies that promote nature-based solutions to the triple environmental crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. More specifically, activities supported by Monaco should help to develop practical, deployable and replicable solutions, based on inclusive participation and led by the local communities primarily concerned.
The members of the Monegasque delegation met Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director: "It's impressive to see how such a small country can have such a big influence on environmental policies", she said, welcoming the commitment of the Sovereign and his Government to environmental issues and sustainable development.
