Drama students at Lycée Albert I celebrate spirit of resistance at Théâtre des Muses

On 27 May 2015, four major figures who embody the spirit of the French resistance were interred in the Panthéon mausoleum, in Paris. The four were Pierre Brossolette, Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz, Germaine Tillion and Jean Zay.

To commemorate this event, on 23 May (at 5.30 p.m.) and 24 May (at 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.), drama students from Lycée Albert I presented a reading of extracts from the work of these illustrious resistance figures at the Théâtre des Muses.

This project continues the series of live performances organised as part of a school cultural activities programme which aims to give meaning to the “day of commemoration to honour victims of genocide and prevent crimes against humanity” (27 January), here coupled with National Resistance Day (27 May).

This is an opportunity to engage with pupils in a reflection on the holocaust, as well as on the values of the resistance and those held by the National Council of the Resistance.

The aim of this event is both to honour the memory of these four individuals and to demonstrate, beyond the ordeals endured, the strength and commitment which they embody. The activity is being organised with the “Le Devoir de Mémoire” (“The Duty of Remembrance”) association, chaired by Mr Jean Pinon, which is working in partnership with the Department of Education, Youth and Sport to ensure the memory of former deportees and resistance fighters is respected.
