World Environment Day - 5 June 2016

The theme of this year's World Environment Day on Sunday 5 June is: "Zero Tolerance for the Illegal Trade in Wildlife".

Monaco is conscious of the major issues related to hunting and wildlife trafficking, and has been a Party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1978.

The aim of CITES is to protect wildlife from the commercial over-exploitation that is partly responsible for the decline in global biodiversity.  It protects more than 35,000 species of fauna and flora.

The Convention provides that a CITES document must be obtained prior to the import, export or re-exportation of any specimen, animal or plant, living or dead, that belongs to one of the species included in the CITES lists.

In the Principality, the Department of the Environment is responsible for issuing CITES permits and for monitoring professionals and private individuals.
