Monaco takes action for World Diabetes Day

On Wednesday 14 November, World Diabetes Day, the Monaco Red Cross organised a free screening drive on the Fontvieille esplanade in partnership with the Prince’s Government and Princess Grace Hospital.

The goal of this joint initiative? Raise awareness and inform people about this disease, the different types of diabetes and the ways to prevent it.

Large numbers of people came for the free and painless screening, reported Dominique Martet, Manager of the Monaco Red Cross, with enthusiasm. “The Monegasque population answered our call, proving the importance of this day — observed by the Principality and 150 other countries around the world — in raising awareness about diabetes.

Minister of Health and Social Affairs Christophe Robino was also screened. He recalled that “diabetes should not be underestimated, and the best treatment is still prevention. This day of coordination with the Monaco Red Cross reflects a collective awareness and the Principality will continue to pursue its commitment to improving quality of life and care of the population and employees, where they need it. “

Among the different types of diabetes, Type II, which affects 90% of diabetics, is specifically targeted by screening efforts. It particularly affects people over 40 who are prone to a poor lifestyle (stress, an overly rich diet, sugary drinks, lack of physical activity, etc.)

In other cases, diabetes is hereditary. In fact, 40% of people who have a diabetic parent are at risk of having the illness themselves. This rate rises to 70% if both parents are diabetic.

Diabetes remains a silent disease, as Sophie Broussole Bun, endocrinologist-nutritionist at Princess Grace Hospital recalls: “One in two people with diabetes today do not know they are diabetic. Many people experience no symptoms and often discover their condition after having it for ten years.  Some 500 million people have diabetes worldwide and these numbers are on a steady rise due to our lifestyles, overweight and an ageing population.” Her practice advice? “Diabetes can be prevented by eating three balanced meals a day with vegetables, proteins and starches and by exercising daily. Soda and pre-prepared dishes with too much sugar, salt and fat must be avoided.”

Princess Grace Hospital has a diabetes unit and offers follow-up for diabetic patients. Consultations with a nurse to learn about the illness are also available.
