Public car parks: new regulations to improve use

©DR

A Sovereign Ordinance and two Ministerial Decrees which came into force on 1 November 2023 provide the Public Car Parks Office with new means of action to promote better use of the space available in the Principality's public car parks.

While the quality of the reception and infrastructure is often praised, public car parks are not immune to various forms of misuse, from abandoning vehicles to storing bulky items, which has a negative impact on customers who can no longer benefit from the spaces. These vehicles prevent the car park spaces from being rotated, at the detriment of both casual customers and season ticket holders, and sometimes pose a safety risk, particularly if they are in poor condition, endangering users or public car park facilities.

As a result, vehicles parked improperly or abandoned for long periods in the same space without a season ticket can be impounded more effectively.

With this reform, the Public Car Parks Office and its agents, who will now be officially authorised, will have better means at their disposal to rectify these situations, for the benefit of users and particularly residents.
