Monaco participates in 1st Regular Session of UN World Food Programme Executive Board

Monaco’s Ambassador to Italy H.E. Mr Robert Fillon, accompanied by a delegation,* took part in the 1^st Regular Session of the World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Board, held in Rome from 25 to 27 February 2019.

During the opening session, guest of honour H.E. Mr Daniel Kablan Duncan, Vice-President of Côte d’Ivoire, talked about the WFP’s Regional Centre of Excellence Against Hunger and Malnutrition in West and Central Africa. The centre, the first of its kind in Africa, is based in Abidjan and will be officially opened on 25 March 2019.

The Executive Board also elected its new President, H.E. Mr Hisham Mohamed Mostafa Badr, the Egyptian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WFP, and reviewed a report on the WFP’s support for enhanced resilience to tackle food security and nutrition.

Outside the session, Ms Emilie Larese-Silvestre and Ms Martine Garcia-Mascarenhas met the WFP’s Chief of Technical Assistance, Private Sector Partnership and Innovation, who presented them with a copy of a new book published with the World Bank on the challenges of school feeding programmes (Monaco’s Official Development Assistance has supported efforts in this area, notably in Burundi and Niger). The WFP’s new school feeding strategy for 2020–2030 seeks to meet the needs of the 73 million children who are not currently receiving a meal in school.

School feeding brings multiple benefits (pupils’ health, attendance and academic performance, girls’ enrolment in school, family purchasing power, etc.) and is a powerful tool in the fight against hunger and poverty.
