Closer ties with France
In order to prevent a German cousin making a claim to the throne, a situation that would have been unacceptable for France, Prince Albert I made his granddaughter Charlotte, the illegitimate daughter of his son, Crown Prince Louis, a rightful heir to the throne.
The new Franco-Monegasque treaty, signed on 17 July 1918, which replaced the previous treaty of 1861, remained secret until the conclusion of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. The Franco-Monegasque treaty was mentioned in article 436 of the Treaty of Versailles, making it enforceable.
