Operation to Clean the Saint Nicholas Rocks

As part of its mission to manage marine biodiversity, the Department of the Environment is organising the cleaning of the Saint Nicholas Rocks (Roches Saint-Nicolas) on 15 June 2018. 

These coralligenous rocks, situated by the exit of the Port of Fontvieille, are rich in biodiversity, which needs to be preserved.  However, the rocks are subject to pressure from human activities, as demonstrated by the presence of numerous macro-waste products, a large proportion of which is from recreational fishing (for example fishing lines and hooks).  Over the past two years, a large amount of waste has been removed from this area in several cleaning operations. 

This clean-up is also an opportunity to bring together various local players in a shared environmental activity.  It will be organised in two stages: 

The first day is scheduled for 15 June 2018, in association with the institutional bodies: the Palace Guards, the Fire and Emergency Service, the Marine and Airport Police Division, the Oceanographic Museum and Monaco Scientific Centre. 

The second day of cleaning will take place in autumn 2018 in collaboration with Monegasque associations that are involved in protecting the marine environment.
