On Tuesday 18 February, H.S.H. Prince Albert II presided over the official signing ceremony for the World Capitals of Sport commemorative plaque, marking the Principality’s selection as the World Capital of Sport 2025. The ceremony, held in the Mirror Room at the Prince’s Palace, was attended by Monegasque dignitaries and representatives from the Association of European Capitals of Sport (ACES).

The official signing of the commemorative plaque, witnessed by Ms Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Acting Minister of State, and Mr Lionel Beffre, Minister of the Interior, symbolises Monaco’s commitment to the development of sport.

“Sport in the Principality is a great way for the country to cement its international profile, since a city state can be a standard bearer for ethical, sustainable, open and engaged sport,” said H.S.H. Prince Albert II at the ceremony. “I am a great believer in the positive and sustainable impact of sporting values, values that I strive to convey through the various roles that I hold as part of the sporting movement and the International Olympic Committee.”

As Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ms Berro-Amadeï presented the symbolic ACES flag to the Sovereign Prince, who immediately entrusted it to Mr Lionel Beffre, marking the official transfer of the title. The plaque itself was presented to ACES President Mr Gianfranco Lupattelli.

Being named the next World Capital of Sport after Sofia (Bulgaria) in 2024 is a reward for Monaco’s commitment to sport for all, as well as its cutting-edge infrastructure and support for international competitions. The title will be highlighted all year long in the Principality, at sporting occasions and celebrations such as the fortieth anniversary of the Louis II Stadium.
