Combating the Processionary Caterpillar – Treating the Pine Trees

©Direction de la Communication - Manuel Vitali

As part of biological measures to control the pine processionary caterpillar, a large number of the Principality's pine trees were given preventative treatment in June, using a trial method based on sex pheromones.

To complete this process, the "Gardens" Section of the Department of Urban Amenities sprayed the remaining pine trees with a preventive treatment containing Bacillus Thuringiensis, a natural bacterium.

This operation, which took place on 8,9 and 12 October 2020, was undertaken using thermal sprayers loaded onto lorries.

The following areas were treated :

- Condamine:  the area around Port Hercule and the Place Sainte Dévote;

- Fontvieille:  the eastern part of the sea wall, the Avenue des Papalins, the roundabout in front of the Shopping Centre, the Rue du Gabian (opposite the Joueclub) and the forecourt of the Stadium;

- Moneghetti:  St. Michael's Church, the Rue Bosio, the Avenue Pasteur (entrance to the cemetery) and the entrance to the Exotic Garden;

- Moulins:  The Place Leo Ferré, the Boulevard du Larvotto, the Avenue de Grande-Bretagne and the Square Churchill;

- Larvotto: the Portier roundabout and the Boulevard Princesse Grace.
