Presentation to UN on cooperation between Monaco and IAEA
During the review by the United Nations General Assembly on 12 December of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report, Ms Valérie Bruell-Melchior, Minister-Counsellor and Monaco’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, set out the close cooperation between the Principality and the Agency.
Offering thanks to IAEA Director General Mr Yukiya Amano, the Monegasque representative highlighted the support provided by the Principality to the IAEA’s various health programmes, particularly in the fight against cancer, but also those programmes focused on improving scientific understanding of ocean acidification.
Ms Bruell-Melchior additionally noted that, since 2010, the Principality has hosted international workshops specifically dedicated to the socioeconomic impact of ocean acidification, organised in collaboration with the IAEA’s marine environmental studies laboratories, the headquarters of which are located in Monaco. These laboratories are also home to the Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre. In her speech, Ms Bruell-Melchior emphasised the partnership between the Principality of Monaco, the IAEA and the United Nations Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan in the organisation of marine pollution monitoring initiatives at the regional level.
