During a conference held from 27 to 30 May 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Ms Isabelle Picco, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations, reaffirmed the Principality’s support for the sustainable development of small island developing States, which are particularly vulnerable to economic shocks and the effects of climate change.

The Conference adopted a ten-year programme of action to support the development of these small islands, particularly in the fight against the effects of climate change, sustainable tourism, capacity building, innovation, energy transition, oceans, and access to international finance.

The Principality of Monaco highlighted the potential of the blue economy and praised the key role of these small island developing States in protecting the ocean and marine biodiversity.

H.E. Ms Picco attended the event organised by the High Seas Alliance on the Treaty for biodiversity conservation in the high seas, recently ratified by Monaco. The President of Palau, the first State to ratify the Treaty, along with Ministers from the Maldives, Fiji, Belize, Singapore, Mauritius and the Ambassador of Micronesia also participated. Mauritius and Micronesia announced their ratification of the treaty.
