The Travelling Collection

The Travelling Collection is a project initiated by the British artist Celia Pym with the aim of gathering together, in suitcases, fragments of fabrics, embroidery, headdresses and accessories from the costume collection of the Monte-Carlo Opera, which was deposited at the NMNM.

Throughout the year, this travelling collection has been taken out of the museum's storerooms and put on show to the public in schools, associations such as AMAPEI and FIGHT AIDS, and also the Psychiatry Department of the Princess Grace Hospital.  Eight hundred and fifty people therefore had the opportunity to see and handle these items, find out about conservation and restoration issues and, finally, take part in creative workshops.

A specific project for children with special educational needs was also offered to the classes of teachers Evelyne Luciani, Delphine Cornille and Arnaud Balducci from the Ecole St. Charles.

Six months of collaboration between the museum, teachers and pupils made it possible to raise awareness in several different creative areas, through monthly workshops featuring drawing, writing, painting, creating costumes and props, staging, dance, music and theatre.  The various working sessions culminated in a play performed by the children on Thursday 16 May.

Taking part in individual and collective projects, working in a group, giving free rein to the imagination, undertaking practical work and learning about the art of the theatre are all skills that the children were able to develop this year – a year full of artistic and personal experiences.
