Monaco leads negotiations on the UN resolution on sport
On 1 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution entitled “Sport as an enabler of sustainable development”, without a vote, following intergovernmental negotiations open to all Member States, led by the Permanent Mission of Monaco.
The resolution reaffirms the contribution made by sport, particularly to education, physical and mental well-being, sexual equality, the independence of women and persons with disabilities, and social inclusion. It also promotes the values of peace, such as tolerance, respect, friendship, and dialogue.
Other subjects were also discussed, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the fight against corruption in sport, the importance of partnerships, and the role of the International Olympic Committee and the UN agencies.
Following a proposal by Monaco, two new elements were added to the resolution this year. The first is the contribution of sport to the fight against climate change, and the second, the need for measures to prevent and combat all forms of violence in sport, and in particular human trafficking.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Florian BOTTO, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the UN, presented the draft resolution on behalf of the co-chairs of the Group of Friends of Sport, H.E. Ms Isabelle PICCO and her counterpart from Qatar, and gave a speech on behalf of the Principality of Monaco, reiterating that sport is part of the Principality’s identity.
