Official visit to Monaco Centre for Addiction Treatment, Support and Prevention (CSAPAM), offering a listening ear, help and support to anyone affected by addiction
H.S.H. Prince Albert II recently paid an official visit to the Monaco Centre for Addiction Treatment, Support and Prevention (CSAPAM). The Prince was accompanied by Mr Christophe Robino, Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Dr Jean-François Goldbroch, a psychiatrist specialising in addiction and Director of CSAPAM, and Dr Alexandre Bordero, Director of Health Affairs.
Located in the heart of Fontvieille, CSAPAM is open to anyone who is dependent on psychoactive substances, or whose consumption of such substances is risky or harmful, and their loved ones. It offers a listening ear and support, as well as a medical and psychological assessment, enabling the Centre to propose tailored treatment for each individual.
CSAPAM, a response to the problem of addiction, is aimed at adults employed in Monaco, students pursuing their education in Monaco, and residents and nationals of the Principality aged 15 or older who are dealing with addiction in their daily lives. Its goal is to welcome users and offer assistance with their own addictive behaviours or those of their family, friends or colleagues.
This local, accessible centre provides an anonymous, free and caring environment and is open to anyone affected by addiction, whether related to alcohol, smoking, drugs (use of cannabis, heroine, cocaine, amphetamines, synthetic derivatives such as methamphetamine, poppers, etc.), addiction to certain medications (morphine, pain medication, etc.) or to behaviours such as gambling (scratch cards, lottery, slot machines, horse racing, poker, roulette) or screens (smartphones, computers, television, tablets) which have an impact on the person’s life, both socially and professionally, and the lives of their family.
A confidential and human space
CSAPAM is a free, anonymous resource centre that can be accessed with or without an appointment. Confidentiality, respect and a non-judgemental approach are guaranteed. The Centre, which is open to all residents, employees and students aged 15 or over in the Principality, offers free personal consultations with specialist staff.
“Our approach is based on a caring, confidential, non-judgemental approach, with the aim of supporting each individual to regain their freedom. Addiction, after all, is a loss of freedom. We work with our patients to rediscover it. The therapeutic relationship is our driving force,” noted Dr Goldbroch in his speech.
First step towards a solution
CSAPAM offers a discreet welcome, active listening and personalised support for anyone directly or indirectly affected by problematic consumption. It tailors its services to meet the needs of each user, whether that is an answer to a question, some ad-hoc assistance or longer-term support.
In addition to providing treatment, CSAPAM carries out prevention work in association with schools, businesses and social organisations. It also supports the friends and family of people experiencing difficulties, who often feel powerless in these situations.
A free and practical response to the challenges of addiction in Monaco
By providing a dedicated local service, the Prince’s Government hopes to offer easier access to early treatment, reduce health and social risks and break through the isolation experienced by those affected.
“Too often, addiction is still associated with shame, guilt and isolation. But the first step is to restore self-esteem. Ending the stigma is therefore at the heart of what we do,” concluded Dr Goldbroch.
